Stanford-Tinker Seed Funds
CLAS solicits requests for funding
Deadline: May 15, 2024
CLAS is seeking to fund initiatives that allow Stanford faculty to enhance their scholarship and student engagement - to continue contributing to the generation of knowledge and learning about Latin America. We seek to support projects in the social sciences and the arts and humanities. Projects in the natural sciences with focus on climate crisis and public health are also eligible. We will give priority to funding projects that involve a radical re-examination of the way in which social, cultural, political and economic arrangements have reinforced inequality and exclusion. We also seek proposals engaging with movements for indigenous recognition and autonomy and linguistic empowerment.
Allowable expenses may include but are not limited to: student assistantships, publication support, software, datasets, survey collection, and when COVID-19 allow it, travel and field research.
The Stanford-Tinker Seed Fund (STSF) will provide support for new initiatives or pilot studies that may bring forth new approaches and visions regarding Latin America. STSF awards range from $2,000 to $20,000 for one academic year period and are not renewable. CLAS does not provide administrative support. Applications may include a stipend for a graduate student to assist with the project.
Applicants must be Stanford faculty members. Please submit a request for funding approximately 1500 words (may include appendices).
In your request, please include:
- An explanation in lay terms of the research project, including a brief statement of the question to be addressed and its context within the scholarly literature;
- a description of the hypothesis, research methods, or other relevant methodological aspects explaining how the question will be answered;
- an estimated budget
- information on other funding being pursued or plans for long term sustainability of the project;
- a statement of the likely impact of the Stanford-Tinker Seed Fund on the project.
Faculty members of the CLAS Advisory Board will review the submitted requests. Committee members who may have submitted a proposal will recuse themselves from discussions of their own submissions. Funding decisions will be announced by June 30, 2024.
Awardees are asked to submit a brief narrative report to be used for stewardship purposes, elaborating on the impact of the STSF on the project
