The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and the Stanford World Language Project (SWLP) invite new and experienced teachers of Spanish for Heritage Learners to join this professional development course tailored to the pedagogical needs of the Heritage Spanish classroom.

Success in the Heritage Spanish Classroom
"Strand S" of the 2021-22 Seminars for World Language Teachers

Dates: September 25, October 30, 2021, and January 22, February 12, and March 12, 2022
Time: Four hours each day plus optional time for collaboration, coaching, and support
Location: Online, blend of synchronous and asynchronous sessions

Acquire and share concepts and strategies for creating culturally responsive pedagogy. Address issues of motivation, establishing learning outcomes that take into account heritage learners’ foundational strengths and knowledge and incorporating current and historical topics on Latin America into the curriculum. Design course materials and practices that promote literacy development and align with the CA World Languages Standards and Framework. Emphasis will be given to supporting instruction of these principles in the virtual world. A special feature of this strand is topical presentations by Stanford-affiliated professors.

Registration fee per teacher (Heritage Spanish "Strand S"):

  • $300 for teachers registering individually*
  • $75 for student teachers

*Teachers should check with schools and districts for funding specific to the heritage learner classroom, such as Title I (Improving Academic Achievement), Title II (Professional Development), Title III (English Learners), and LCFF/LCAP Common Core State Funds.

Stanford World Language Project

The Stanford World Language Project also offers the following courses for instructors of world languages:

  • Strand D: Advanced Special Focus Sessions (designed for teachers who have completed a minimum of three other strands)
