Indigenous Peoples' Day

Oct 14 2019

Reminder of Ancestral Land

Today and each day, CLAS acknowledges that we are in the land and territory of the Ohlone original peoples. Specific tribes and their locations are difficult to pinpoint, due to the nomadic character of the settlements. However, the Puichon tribe seems to have settled in the San Francisquito Creek that marks the limit of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. It is not easy to determine the current numbers on Native Americans, but several groups are seeking federal recognition. The Muwekma Ohlone tribe claims an ancestry to the original dwellers of this area and is appealing a case lost in 2011 for Federal recognition.

There are many ways that we can support Native Americans or the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, but drawing from their own webpages I may suggest:

The Indian Health Center of Santa Clara Valley
The Native Voice TV
Stanford Native American Cultural Center
Ohlone Muwekma Tribe
