CLAS Faculty-Led Events Grant
The Center for Latin American Studies invites proposals for Stanford faculty-led collaborative workshops, symposia, colloquia, conferences, and lectures on Latin American topics for AY 2023-24.
Priority will be given to proposals that include topics related to indigenous rights, Amazon rainforest, and migration.
Deadline: Wednesday, November 1, 2023- For Major Conferences. Proposals for less complex events are accepted throughout the year until funds are exhausted.
The CLAS Faculty-Led Events Grant program offers faculty and students from Stanford as well as other institutions the opportunity to present their current research and explore topics of common intellectual concern. Events may be open to the Stanford community and the general public where appropriate. The core goals of the program include:
- The realization and development of new research ideas or the presentation of major research findings in a given area.
- The exploration of ideas and issues that cross the usual disciplinary or institutional boundaries and/or themes which have an international context.
- The support of collaborative research, particularly in the development of areas of research that no single researcher or institution could address alone.
All proposals must be chaired by at least one faculty member. To foster and strengthen linkages and existing connections between Latin American scholars, students and professionals, we especially welcome proposals involving Latin American colleagues and counterparts.
Funding Guidelines
We invite proposals ranging from $500 to $10,000. For the AY 2023-24, we expect to fund two major 2- or 3-day conferences and a number of one-day events (colloquia, symposia, guest speakers).
Faculty applying for CLAS funding are encouraged to seek co-sponsorship from their own departments and other campus units.
The budget must include funds to hire a student to provide administrative support, but they may not be used to buy out faculty time or provide permanent staff salaries. Funds may be used for:
- Equipment
- Technical and organizational assistance (i.e.: website design and maintenance, publicity, graphic design and poster production)
- Airfare, Travel and Hotel
- Advertising costs
- Food
- Meeting costs
- Expenses for invited visitors
- Student administrative assistance
Sara Clemente, CLAS Events and Communication Officer, is responsible for the financial administration of the program and will track expenses for each program and provide expense reports. Faculty and graduate student coordinators are responsible for tracking expenses and working in conjunction with Ms. Clemente to ensure accuracy of expenses. Faculty and graduate student coordinators are responsible for complying with all Stanford and CLAS financial reimbursement and reporting requirements and policies.
Reporting
Awardees are required to submit a one- or two-page report ready to be posted in our website AND a complete expense report by May 26, 2024.
Proposal Guidelines
We encourage faculty to consult with CLAS Associate Director, esaenz [at] stanford.edu (subject: Faculty%20Events%20Grant%20) (Elizabeth Sáenz-Ackermann), in advance of submitting proposals. She will review drafts and collaborate in budget preparation up to one week before the submission deadline. Please see attachment below of a well-written proposal.

The Center for Latin American Studies promotes the expression of a diversity of views and opinions to ensure open academic discussion. However, it is within the discretion of the Director to ensure that the Center's activities are in keeping with the founding grant of the University, that mandates the promotion of "public welfare by exercising an influence in behalf of humanity" teaching "the great principles of government as derived from the inalienable rights of man to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
