CLAS Field Research Travel Grants

The Center for Latin American Studies invites proposals for Stanford graduate student-led research in Latin America.  CLAS will distribute travel grants of up to $1,000 for approved proposals.

Application Requirements

  • Cover sheet must include name, SUNet ID, Student ID Number, email, department, research title, location, dates of travel, and amount requested.
  • CV
  • Brief research proposal narrative (1-2 page max)
  • Complete itemized budget ( i.e. airfare, lodging, local transportation)
  • Graduate transcript
  • Letter of recommendation from your advisor

Deadlines

For research taking place October 2019-February 2020, submit application and materials by Fri, Nov 1, 2019. The letter of recommendation should be received by this date as well.

For research taking place March-August 2020, submit application and materials by Wed, Feb 5, 2020.

CLAS will aim to send notifications 4-5 weeks after the deadline.

Reporting

Awardees are expected to:

  • Submit a one-page report of the research conducted ready to be posted in our website AND a complete budget report within 30 days after the completion of their travel.
  • Be ready to give a presentation on research findings, if requested by CLAS


Tinker Graduate Field Research Grant (TGFR)

Tinker Graduate Field Research Grants (TGFR) support graduate students with their first experience in developing an independent research project and conducting preliminary field research in Latin America.  These grants are meant for students to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of language and culture; to familiarize themselves with information sources relevant to their studies; to conduct pilot studies and preliminary investigations; and to develop contacts with scholars and institutions in their fields. CLAS will distribute grants of up to $2,500 for approved proposals.

Eligibility
Stanford graduate student in any department that will conduct preliminary field research in Latin America during the summer months of June-September 2020. Past TGFR recipients are not eligible to apply for a second award.

Funds for the 2019-20 academic year are available only for research taking place June-September 2020. 
The online application, materials and letter of recommendation will need to be submitted by Wed, March 4, 2020.

CLAS will aim to send notifications 4-5 weeks after the deadline.

Reporting

Awardees are expected to:

  • Submit to a short report (1-2 pages including a couple of photos) upon reurning to campus
  • Submit a final budget
  • Present and discuss preliminary summer research project in the Autumn quarter
  • Acknowledgement of the Tinker Foundation in any publication and/or mentioning of the research
