GS-LAS Minor Requirements for AY 2026-27

Completion of 28 Units:

  • First-year students should plan to take COLLEGE 119: Making of the Modern World, which fulfills both the Global Studies minor and COLLEGE global perspectives requirements.
    • Those students unable to take COLLEGE 119 should, in consultation with their subplan advisor, select a replacement course from a list of pre-approved courses.
  • A 5-unit course surveying Latin America: ILAC 131 - Introduction to Latin America: Cultural Perspectives. A substitute introductory course for ILAC 131 may be approved by petition.
  • At least 14 units in courses comprising a coherent area focus on a theoretical problem or regional issue in the fields of humanities, social sciences, and/or environment and health.
  • At least 15 of the 28 units must be completed at Stanford. All courses counted toward the minor must be taken for a letter grade, except where letter grades are not offered.

Fulfillment of the Foreign Language Requirement:

Completion of three quarters, or equivalent, of college-level study of a language spoken in Latin America or achieving intermediate level of proficiency in a language spoken in Latin America on the ACTFL scale in a test administered by the Stanford Language Center. Contact the Stanford Language Center for test dates and procedures.

If completion of the three-quarter sequence of language training is done at  Stanford University, students may apply up to six units towards the 28-unit minimum requirement. 

Recommended:

Experience in Latin America such as study abroad, field research, or an internship. Students participating in the Bing Overseas Studies Program are especially encouraged to enroll.

Capstone Project (Optional):

Students may work with the subplan advisor to develop a capstone project to count towards the unit fulfillment of the minor. Projects may include (but are not limited to):

  1. Research with units through directed reading under the supervision of the subplan advisor.
    1. Research may take place at Stanford or during a relevant study abroad program, and options may include regional fieldwork, creative arts projects, short films, etc.​​
  2. Advanced language study beyond the subplan minimum requirement with units through directed reading under the supervision of the subplan advisor.
    1. Intensive language training may take place at Stanford, off-campus, or overseas. 

Students may propose other projects related to their subplan.
