Global Studies Minor in Latin American Studies
The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) falls under the division of Stanford Global Studies (SGS). As a part of SGS, CLAS is pleased to offer a Global Studies minor with a specialization in Latin American Studies (GS-LAS). This minor is especially well-suited for undergraduates who plan to make service, research, or study abroad in Latin America a part of their Stanford experience.
Why Global Studies?
Global studies builds on the rich tradition of area studies: the interdisciplinary study of world regions and their intersecting cultures, languages, histories, politics, environments, and societies. By drawing on multiple fields, from human biology and earth sciences to music and engineering, students gain a nuanced understanding of their chosen world region and its place within an interconnected world.
The Stanford Global Studies (SGS) Division is the university’s hub for education, research, and community engagement centered on exploring issues, societies, and cultures in regional and global perspective.
Drawing on its network of over 300-affiliated faculty across the university, SGS equips Stanford students with the interdisciplinary knowledge and skills essential to leading in a global context and fosters innovative research that deepens society’s understanding of critical regions and global issues.

Global Studies Minor in Latin American Studies
The Global Studies minor in Latin American Studies consists of courses surveying the Latin American region’s interdisciplinary fields, including the humanities, social sciences, and environmental and health studies through in-depth coursework and language training. We welcome students from all majors.
Those interested in declaring the GS-LAS minor must develop an individual program plan and set up an appointment with a GS-LAS minor advisor (either the CLAS Academic and Student Services Officer or the Associate Director) to review their minor plan PRIOR to declaring in Axess. Units taken for major credit cannot be double-counted towards the minor. The GS-LAS minor is especially well-suited for undergraduates who plan to make service, research, or study abroad in Latin America a part of their Stanford experience. The minor and the specialization appear on the transcript but not on the diploma.
